Butterflies have been the inspiration of many poets. Jake and Mom Here is one of our favorites:

Happiness is a Butterfly...

  • Happiness is a butterfly which,
    When pursued,
    Is always beyond your grasp,
    But which, If you will sit down quietly,
    Might alight upon you.

There are many types of poems. Jake’s Song is an example of a quick couplet. Quick couplets are a pair of successive verses that rhyme with each other. 

Here are some other types of poetry you might try:

Haiku
A Haiku poem is about nature. It consists of three lines. The structure is as follows:
Line 1: 5 syllables
Line 2: 7 syllables
Line 3: 5 syllables
Diamante
A diamante has five lines and is diamond-shaped. Its structure is as follows:
Line 1: Noun
Line 2: Two adjective s that describe the noun in line 1
Line 3: Three words that end in “ing” that describe the noun in line 1
Line 4: Two adjectives that describe the noun in line 1
Line 5: A noun that renames the noun in line 1: can also repeat the noun
