I read Jake and the Migration of the Monarch to all of my classes. All of my students enjoyed the story, K-5. My younger students enjoyed the story because of the young character, Jake, and the butterflies. The older students enjoyed learning how monarchs migrate without a compass. They enjoyed talking about the constellations and finding your way using the stars and sun as a guide.
Having both the author and illustrator visit for our Family Reading and Writing Night was a great success. Dr. O'Connor and Mrs. Hollinger flying across the stage in butterfly costumes is a must see for children of all ages. The education about monarch migration and conservation was presented in a fun, interactive way with the children acting out their parts to provide the butterflies with food, water, and shelter. One of my students later told me her favorite part was when the "butterflies" were flying around the audience. "They were so funny."
This presentation is great for all ages.
