What Pine Street Elementary said about Author Crystal
Ball O'Connor's visit:
“What a joy and
tremendous delight it was having Dr. O'Connor visit Pine
Street School! She brought to life her book, Jake and
the Migration of the Monarch, to the students. In an
exciting and active presentation, our students experienced the
migration of the monarch butterflies from a loving,
heartwarming perspective. Nonfiction learning has never
been so fun.” Veneal Williams, Media Assistant, Pine
Street
Elementary
“Dr. Crystal Ball O'Connor will excite your students
and motivate them to learn as she reads and explains her heart-warming picture
book, Jake and the Migration of the Monarch, through the integration of
art, drama, movement, science, literature and social studies. Both the
teachers and the students become totally engaged in the process of the migration
of monarch butterflies from Canada to Mexico as they participate in singing,
rhythms, movements, costumes and props. The students take an imaginary field
trip south as they prepare for winter during Dr. O'Connor's story telling.
Along the process, they become emotionally and physically involved as they learn
about the characteristics of monarchs, the food that they eat, how they travel
in groups, the way that they protect themselves, and a little about the Mexican
culture. In addition, they learn the effects of nature on the migration of
two special butterflies to Mexico. Teachers are able to learn from Dr.
O'Connor's creative process of teaching, for she is truly a Master Teacher.”
Martha Sigmon, Third Grade Teacher, Pine Street
